Railways and Electrical Utilities

Vegetation Proximity Monitoring

Large railway operators such as the SNCF and Deutsche Bahn spend more than €120 Million per year in vegetation management alone. So, how to optimise this spend to prioritise management in the highest risk areas?

Traditionally, overhead powerlines were monitored using helicopters and more recently with drones. However these platforms are very expensive given each railway has more than 30,000 km of rail to manage.

That's why WEO is developing with a European railway manager an alternative method of mapping vegetation proximity to railways, utilising satellite data. Contact us to find out more.

Wildfire Preparedness

Vegetation Risk Mapping

As wildfires approach from wilderness areas towards towns, recent examples in Greece and Portugal show that dozens of lives and hundreds of properties can be lost in a matter of hours. The speed of these events mean that preparation is key.

Good preparation can be the difference between a home being saved or destroyed. However, for municipalities and large landowners, it can be difficult to ensure that adequate vegetation clearing has taken place.

Therefore, WEO can provide monthly maps to help identify areas at greatest risk from overgrown vegetation, helping pioritise interventions in the lead up to the fire season.
