HotPay: satellite-detected heat for parametric insurance

In the framework of the ESA Space for Insurance project, WEO is deploying its satellite- and AI-based technology to quantify how heatwaves impact human activities in developing countries. The resulting datasets will be made available to the parametric insurance sector, enabling insurers and local stakeholders to design accessible, data-driven insurance products that strengthen climate resilience.

Being part of the Australian Red Cross Humanitech x 2024 QBE AcceliCITY Humanitarian Challenge was a game-changer for WEO🌍and we highly encourage other purpose-driven startups to apply.

The energy here at Fira Barcelona is electric and the conversations around data, climate, and collaboration have been so motivating. Our booth (D31, Luxembourg Pavilion) was buzzing all day with meaningful chats from cities and partners eager to act on climate risk, to fellow innovators exploring how satellite data can support greener, more resilient cities.

🏆 We are thrilled to announce that WEO🌍 has been awarded the Startup Category Winner of the 1st UN Citiverse Challenge, announced at the Citiverse Assembly organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and its partners.

WEO has been selected for Google for Startups Accelerator: Climate Change Cohort in Europe! We’re so excited to team up with Google’s experts and 14 other startups for this 10-week program to accelerate climate action!

WEO is thrilled to be amongst the 11 finalists from 128 applicants for the QBE Insurance AcceliCity Resilience Challenge – Humanitarian Track! The potential partnership and a pilot with the Australian Red Cross enhances our opportunity to boost community resilience.

WEO welcomes Asritha Gottiparthy to join its growing team of software engineers. She holds a Master of Technology in Software Systems and her background in software development on ETL data pipelines perfectly aligns with WEO’s current stack.

To help cities build resilience against floods, WEO has launched the STURM project to leverage deep learning and data fusion for sub-pixel mapping and precise flood extent and depth measurement.

What do you learn from your interns?  This summer, WEO is excited to welcome MSc. student Enrico Barchiesi for a summer internship focussed on enhancing our deep learning models for land cover mapping.

What a week at VivaTech 2025! 🚀🌍 From climate resilience to AI for good, the conversations we had in Paris were energising—and deeply aligned with WEO’s mission to turn satellite data into real-world impact.

What an unexpected and brilliant outcome. When we first began working with the Dargo community to co-design our climate resilience platform, we didn’t expect an outcome to involve chainsaws. And yet, this is exactly the kind of grounded, practical action that makes resilience real.

It was a true privilege to join this year’s Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, and yes, it was pretty brilliant to be in the room with President Bill Clinton, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton, alongside some of the most inspiring global leaders and doers out there.
